Femke Hiemstra studied Illustration at the School of Arts in Utrecht. She worked as a freelance illustrator for many years until she decided to concentrate on creating personal works for art shows all over the world.
Hiemstra meticulously paints fantastic sceneries on old surfaces such as antique books, wooden holy water fonts or antique wooden panels. Her slightly dark but humorous world is inhabited by smoking snowmen, dancing skeletons and boxing lollipops. She incorporates typography, mixed media and a variety of influences ranging from fireworks packaging to Japanese woodblock prints.
Fantagraphics published a sublime overview of Hiemstra’s work under the title Rock Candy in 2009. It is packed with artwork, pencil sketches, graphite drawings and inspirations.
