De Nederlander Hanco Kolk brak in 1984 door met Gilles de Geus, een soort Nederlandse, gecreëerd met Peter de Wit voor het stripblad Eppo. Samen maakten ze ook de minder klassieke fotostrip Mannetje & Mannetje, en presenteerden ze een striptekencursus op de Nederlandse TV.
Een artistiek hoogtepunt bereikte hij met Meccano, een trlogie over een mediteraan vorstendom waarin hebzucht, hedonisme, ijdelheid en hypocrisie alledaagse kost zijn. Het eerste album Beauregard verscheen in 1992. Voor het afsluitende deel Meccano: De Ruwe Gids (2007) verschenen nog het album Retraite (1999, Oog&Blik), over een creatieve dip, en de succesvolle gagreeks S1ngle, wederom een samenwerking met de Wit.
In november 2010 verscheen Kolks nieuwste telg bij De Harmonie: Van Istanbul naar Bagdad, een
bewerking van een reeks reportages door Arnon Grunberg voor NRC.
Hanco Kolk’s comic career was launched with a Dutch kind of Asterix named Gilles de Geus, a collaboration with Peter de Wit. Together they also created the less classic photo comic Mannetje & Mannetje and presented a comic drawing course on TV.
An artistic milestone in his career is the series Meccano, about a mediterranean kingdom ruled by greed, hedonism, idleness and hypocrisy. It started with Beauregard in 1992 and was closed with Meccano: De Ruwe Gids (‘The Rough Guide’) in 2007. In between, Kolk also created the album Retraite (1999, Oog&Blik) and the succesful gag series S1ngle.
His newest one, Van Istanbul naar Bagdad (De Harmonie, 2010), is an adaptation of a series of reports by writer Arnon Grunberg for NRC.
